Every fall I get the same phone call. A homeowner just bought a propane generator, hooked it to a 20-pound grill tank, and watched it die four hours into a storm. Then they call me, a little panicked, asking if something’s broken.

Nothing’s broken. They just never got a straight answer on how much fuel these things actually burn. And to be fair, most spec sheets bury it in a footnote or list it at a load nobody runs.

So let’s fix that. I’ve installed and serviced backup power for about twelve years, and I’m going to give you the real numbers, the math behind them, and the mistakes that leave people in the dark.

What drives propane generator fuel consumption

Three things decide how thirsty your generator is: engine size, how much power you’re pulling, and the outdoor temperature. Engine size sets the ceiling. A little 3,500-watt inverter sips fuel next to a 12,000-watt beast that could run a whole house.

Load is the big one, though. Propane generator fuel consumption isn’t a fixed number, it’s a curve. Pull 25% of the generator’s rated wattage and it barely nibbles. Push it to 100% and it gulps.

Cold matters too. On a 15-degree January morning, the engine works harder and the propane vaporizes more slowly, so you’ll notice a small bump in use and sometimes weak starts.

Propane is measured two ways, and it trips people up

Propane gets sold by the pound (grill tanks) and by the gallon (larger tanks). One gallon of propane weighs about 4.2 pounds and holds roughly 91,500 BTU. A “20 lb” grill tank actually holds about 4.7 gallons when full.

Keep that conversion handy. Manufacturers list burn rates in gallons per hour or BTU per hour, and you’ll want to translate that to real tank time.

Notice the last row. A 22 kW whole-home standby unit would drain a grill tank in under two hours, which is exactly why those get plumbed into a 250- or 500-gallon tank instead.

On a job last winter, a client with a 7,500-watt portable ran his fridge, furnace blower, a few lights, and the internet through a three-day outage. He averaged about 0.9 gallons an hour because his real load hovered near 40%. Two 20 lb tanks got him through each day with margin to swap the empty one at daylight.

What it costs to run per hour

Propane pricing swings by region and season, but let’s use $3.50 a gallon as a fair 2026 average for tank refills. (Grill-tank exchange at the gas station runs more per gallon, often the equivalent of $6 or $7, which is the pricey convenience nobody mentions.)

Run the math on that 7,500-watt unit at half load: 1.1 gallons an hour times $3.50 is about $3.85 an hour. Drop to a realistic 40% load and you’re closer to $3.00. Over a 24-hour outage, figure $70 to $90 in fuel.

The little 3,500-watt inverter is the budget champ at roughly $2.45 an hour at half load, which is why I steer a lot of first-time buyers toward one if their needs are modest.

Tip

How long will one tank last?

Quick reference for the tanks people actually own. These assume a mid-size portable running near half load, the sweet spot most homeowners land in.

  • 20 lb grill tank (4.7 gal): roughly 4 to 6 hours
  • 40 lb tank (9.4 gal): roughly 8 to 12 hours
  • 100 lb tank (23.6 gal): a full day, give or take
  • 250 gal buried/lease tank: several days of comfortable running

A pattern I see all the time: folks buy the generator and one grill tank, then find out at 2 a.m. that “several hours” wasn’t several days. If you want to actually sleep through a storm, keep at least two or three full tanks staged, or step up to a 100 lb cylinder.

Propane has a real edge here that gasoline doesn’t. It doesn’t go stale. Propane versus natural gas, briefly

If your home already has a gas line, natural gas runs a standby unit with no tanks to swap and no fuel to store, though it delivers a bit less power than propane per the same generator. Safety

Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near open windows, and never store propane cylinders inside your home. Carbon monoxide from a generator can kill in minutes. Keep the unit at least 20 feet from the house with the exhaust pointed away, per CPSC guidance.

Squeezing more hours out of every tank

You can stretch fuel without buying a bigger generator. The trick is managing load and heat.

Shed what you don’t need. Every extra 1,000 watts you drop pulls the engine down its consumption curve. A window AC unit or an electric water heater can double your burn rate on its own, so run those in short bursts rather than continuously.
